This week our task was to come up with ideas of existing shared media surfaces. The shared media surfaces had to be in a home or lab environment and it had to help a someone with a specific task. For example, a calendar, which helps individuals stay up to date with their weekly/monthly schedules. Taking a short break, we discussed amongst our group the different ideas we had about shared media within these environments. Throwing ideas around at one and other we were not certain our ideas was correct. Speaking with our tutor we discussed different shared media surfaces within UWE. Discussing shared media such as posters, display monitors, projectors, notes and white boards. Having this conversation with our tutor reassured us that our ideas were on the right track. Sticky notes here we come!
The first room we gathered ideas about was the kitchen. The kitchen is a very popular room for shared media surface and within the next couple of years it will become even more advanced. This is where families cook, eat, have conversations and most likely the last room they see before leaving their home. Gathering our ideas together we put together a list of shared media surfaces you may find in your kitchen:

Within a Lab environment we discussed many different shared media surfaces. Within a lab you will find a lot of equipment which may have a LCD display, manuals and instruction guides. Labs also may have health and safety signs warning users, and fire exit signs. Here is a list of ideas we had for shared media surfaces with a lab environment.

Week 2 - Observation and Field Research
This week was all about our group grabbing a deeper understanding about shared media platforms. Communicating through WhatsApp messenger we spoke about different places in Bristol City centre, that will have multiple shared media surfaces. Within WhatsApp we also discussed the main objectives of that day. Previously two members of our group attended the Web Developer Conference on October 5, 2017, we noticed the Watershed digital media centre had loads of shared media platforms which in some cases where unique. We thought that it will be a great idea if Taye visited Watershed landing a great starting point. Taye then planned to go and check out Colston Hall and explore the different shared media platforms they had. Taking photos and comparing the different surfaces within each establishment. Tayes last objective of the day was to visit Bristol Central Library. We all knew that the Bristol Central Library would have a different ranges of shared media platforms such as Books, Video Tapes, Magazines and its own checkout device. Kamil and Artur went to ASDA shopping centre and had a look at multiple shared media platforms like, ASDA Click and Collect, ASDA Coin star, ASDA Photo booth and ASDA Design A Cake. Sharing all the pictures and information on the WhatsApp group chat. We plan to upload it to our blog.
Watershed Digital Media Centre
The Watershed digital media centre is located on the harbourside of Bristol. This social enterprise is known for its great atmosphere and digital media screenings. Having a café/bar, outside lounge and many different studios. Walking into the Watershed media centre Taye noticed multiple shared media platforms right away. Noticing a lot of monitors, posters, brochures, sticky notes and timetables all sharing information. What stood out the most to him was the fact that after you watched a film you are able to write a short review about the film by sticking note on notice board under the under-film title. This allowed people to share their thoughts about the film and be creative at the same time. Spending some time observing people it showed us that people would rather look at a share media platform rather than ask the information desk. The next location on the list was Colston Hall. Colston hall is very well known for its concerts, performances, plays, workshops and learning zone. Which is a very popular place in Bristol and has been Bristol’s home of music since 1867. We knew that Colston Hall would be filled with plenty of shared media platforms, but we were more concerned with the amount of access we will have. Comparing the Watershed to Colston Hall, Taye concluded that the shared media platforms within these two-different places will be quite similar. From the outside of Colston Hall you immediately see posters, sharing times and dates of events and the Colston Hall trademark. Once inside the building there is a range of digital advertising screens, leaflets on event, posters and much more. Here are some of the pictures from our Colston Hall observation and field research.
ASDA Design a Cake
This device is located inside Asda store next to cakes and breads. It gives the customers an opportunity to create cake of their own design. Customers can upload their own photos to the device and it will be printed onto the top of the cake! The device is very user friendly and almost anyone can understand the graphical user interface and be able to navigate easily to create the cake they want. Kamils Idea - Making a smaller version of device like this that could be obtainable by anyone (inexpensive) for their household. The main reason people would want such device is when they have children who often reject to eat a meal. The device doesn’t have to be specifically a cake creator but printing edible photos onto other foods will very likely encourage children to eat it as they would find it fun. ASDA Click & Collect
This is something that becomes more and more popular as time goes on. The Click and Collect Machine in Asda it almost identical to McDonald’s self-service checkout. However, it serves a different purpose. These screens allow customers to quickly let the store know they have arrived at the store and they would like to collect their order that they have made outside of the store. For example at home, walking to the store or taking public transportation you can order with ease from your smartphone. The GUI is also very simple, it has very large font and buttons with only couple of choices. Customers can either collect their order or return stuff they purchased. If they want to collect, they can just press the big collect button and then they can provide QR code from their device and scan it or they can type the order number. Once they do that, their order should be with them in a matter of minutes. This is a super time saving idea for people who are familiar with technology as making orders on a smartphone may not be the easiest thing for elderly people or people who don’t have that much experience with technology. Another device we encountered on our trip that is extremely useful but also extremely complicated in the way it works. The GUI is very clear and somewhat user friendly. This device is made so users can drop their change into it and the machine and it changes it into notes in exchange for a little fee. Very useful and quick way of exchanging money without bothering anyone like cashiers saving time for everyone.
ASDA Photo-Me Booth
This is now a very common booth found in almost any supermarket. It allows users to take photos of themselves without the need for a photographer. These photos can be used in documents like passports or IDs. Effectively saving people a lot of time and hassle of going to photographers. If people were to go to photographers they would need to look up for one and then go there which is something that require some effort and people nowadays try to do things effortless. The GUI of this device is also on a touch screen surface with very simple rules. It even has a voice that tells you what to press and how to place yourself to face the camera properly to make appropriate photo for a document. It is a very useful device but it took work from many photographers. Technology is something that makes our lives a lot easier but also making many peoples’ lives a lot harder if they do something that technology can take their place. The Self-Checkout system is fully in effect and you find them in almost every market or supermarket. These make queues to the tills a lot shorter. These are the most complicated devices we encountered today but there are very clear instructions. They also have a voice which instructs the customer on what to do and if someone goes wrong or whether you require more assistant. This device also uses interactive touch screen surface which has a simple and intuitive GUI for as many people to understand as possible. The check-out system tells you exactly what to do step by step and also takes you through the payment process. Although this is very useful system that helps to reduce the queues within supermarkets drastically, it is scary on the other hand because of how many jobs such tills have taken already and in the near future we will probably never see cashiers again. So far, we are just being slowly introduced to these self-checkouts to get used to them and know how to use them. But soon, they will take jobs of thousands of people. Today we have got some ideas of what can we design by looking at these devices out there in public. Make Your Own Cake device provided us with some best ideas but also the Click & Collect system can be implemented in smaller environments and we will be looking into it some more later this week. Now as we focus on the interactive surfaces we can see how many of them are out there. This makes us feel good about how the technology is quickly developing to help use with our daily lives but on the other hand it is scary how many people will loose and have already lost jobs because of the technology.
Week 3 - Individual Research
Coming off our observation and field research last Thursday 26/10/2017, we explored many ideas. Meeting as a group the next Monday we discussed the main shared media platforms that stood out to us within our observation and field research. Our overall goal of the shared media surface was to allow the user to have a choice. We did not want to force any actions or objectives onto the user. We also concluded that we wanted our shared media surface to be shared within a home environment but in the kitchen. Coming together as a group we all expressed some great ideas that we would like to explore creating a shared media surface, but we knew we had to stick with one. Last week on our observation and field research was very interesting and out of all shared media surfaces we liked the idea of the ASDA cake machine. What stood out to us was the fact that this shared media surface gave users a choice, it was fun, and it had an end goal. Discussing different ideas, we first wanted get a overall purpose of the our shared media surface. Throughout this week we exchanged messages via WhatsApp messenger and the group decided that we wanted our overall shared media surface be designed around the sugar intake. The reason was because the sugar intake is rising and England and we wanted to explore possibilities on controlling peoples sugar intake.
In 2017, interaction within the kitchen environment has continues to grow. With smart home devices, such as smart fridges, smart toasters, smart dishwasher and amazon dash interaction with the kitchen has improved. Sharing information on monitors, communication between kitchen appliances and people is at an all-time high. The shared media surfaces within my house are calendars, recipe books, notes, appointments and one notice board. I do believe that my kitchen does have is over the average amount of shared media surfaces within it. Our group decided our project will specifically be designed for the kitchen environment, agreeing that the kitchen is one of the most important places of a home. The kitchen is usually also the first room of entry within a home and last room you see before leaving. Having a shared media surface placed in this environment can be used as a reminder, health purposes or even used for enjoyment.
Most experts believe that added a little sugar in someone’s diet is ok, but the truth is most people consume to much sugar per day. According to the (Nation Health Service, 2015) people should drink and eat fewer food that are high in sugar. Consuming to much sugar can lead to tooth decay and contribute to weight gain. According to (Public Health England, 2015) children aging from 4 – 10 are eating and drinking double the amount recommended, this poses a threat to England’s future adults. According to (National Health Service, 2017) the daily sugar intakes are:
- For children age 4 – 6yrs the daily sugar intake is 19g or 5 teaspoons
- For children aged 7 – 10yrs the daily sugar intake is 24g or 6 teaspoons.
- For people over the age of 11 the daily sugar intake is 30g of sugar per day.
Interaction Reward Technique
Implementing a reward into a shared media surface is always a benefit. Rewards make people feel as they have something to work towards. Within our design we plan to implement an rewards giving our targeted audience something to work towards. Rewards also give users enthusiasm to want to participate in an activity. Our idea behind our shared media surface is motivation, beneficial to lives, attractive and somewhat fun. Using a rewarding technique within our design build, will encourage families to want to participate and try their best, forming a little competition. Our groups ideas on rewards so far are movie ticket, event ticket, money or just praise. This is especially motivational for children. According to experts placing rewards next to the problem is the best way to go about a reward system. How will people feel? One constraints with implementing rewards into a shared media surface is that some family matters or housemate might get discourage by not winning a reward. Our group is working on ideas on how we can allow everyone with a shared home or family home to win a reward. We discussed ideas of day rewards, weekly awards and monthly awards. In this way there will always be new winners allow for everyone to have a great chance at winning. In this case house mate or families will continue to use Moti-Diet, forming new habits of a better lifestyle.
Week 4 - Design Brief
PROJECT NAME: Moti-Diet
Our project is an interactive sugar awareness system, with the idea of changing people sugar habits within their family or shared home kitchens. Having a standalone cupboard as the base of Moti-Diet, we plan to implement shared media surfaces around the outside of the it, but inside of the Moti-Diet will be user's favourite confectionery bars, and sweets. Scanning the barcodes before placing confectionery bars and sweets into Moti-Diet will allow for the database to know exactly what is inside of the it. Inside of the cupboard will be a web camera for face recognition, used to log user in and prevent cheating the system. The monitor on the door of the cupboard will display the logo, user profiles, progress charts, product database and winners of the week. Users with the least consumed sugar weekly, will win a reward, decided at the beginning of week. Empty space on the side of cupboard will be filled with a whiteboard displaying new information weekly.
This interactive sugar awareness system will bring forth good habits and prevent future health risk. Designed to be fun and motivational, Moti-Diet will manage sugar consumption, making sure that users do not exceed daily sugar consumption.

Anyone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle. It mainly targets families and housemates living within a home. Moti-Diet will impact them because it will manage their individual sugar consumption, never letting them exceed the daily recommended intake.
WHAT ARE YOUR CONSTRAINTS?
- Cost – Getting Moti-Diets system designed, and implementing all of the shared media surfaces and components
- Time – Having a finish system with 3 months.
WHAT RESOLUTION WILL THE FINAL PROTOTPYE BE?
Our final prototype will be a cardboard look-a-like cupboard, taped with a wooden infrastructure. A monitor will be placed on the outside of the cupboards door with a barcode scanner underneath. Within the empty space on the side of cupboard will be a whiteboard. Inside will have a 1 shelve, providing 2 spaces for confectionery bars, and sweets. A webcam will also be inside of the cardboard look-a-like cupboard.

Week 5 - 1st Prototype and Testing
1st Prototype Design
This week we wanted to bring our rough draft to life, creating our first prototype of Moti-Diet. Previously researching different sources, we decided to build our shared media surface. As a group we wanted to see how people will interact with this shared media surface. We figured, if we were able to make a prototype of Moti-Diet we would be able to test it in a real scenario. This week our plan was to achieve a basic prototype of Moti-Diet by Thursday and be able present it to our tutor. Throughout the week we kept in contact through Whatapp Messenger, sharing ideas about our shared media surface design, features and research plan.
Starting from bottom to top of the first Moti-Diet prototype, Artur began to follow the groups rough draft of the Moti-Diet prototype. Having one small cardboard box laying the foundation of Moti-Diet. Kamil provided the group with the LCD Display and the 4x4 keypad. The LCD display was placed in the lower middle of the box and the keypad to the lower right side of the box. Artur gathered 3 fruit drink plastic bottles and cut them in half, making containers for the confectionery bars, and sweets. Sticking these half-cut plastic bottles side by side on the box, securing them with tape. The next thing we had to do for the Moti-Diet prototype was to create lids for the top of the confectionery bars, and sweets containers. Using another cardboard box, Artur cut small squares in cardboard and made lid for our confectionery bars, and sweets containers. Each confectionery bars, and sweets container had its own lid allowing for individuals to open their container without opening anyone else’s. Below is our first prototype of Moti-Diet.
1st Prototype Testing and Observation
Prior to testing the prototype and installing it in our observation environment which was the kitchen, we have decided that we had to present the device to our selected users and explain how to use the device and what is it’s purpose. We have gathered all 3 participants and handed them the questionnaires which we have designed earlier. After they filled out the questionnaires we have carried out a presentation of the Prototype 1 and we have used an example scenario in which the device could be used.
The participants were asked to interact with the prototype several times in the testing phase over several days and we have decided that we will use an example scenario which should help them to better understand how the prototype works over longer periods of time. We have asked the participants to present how they are going to interact with the prototype and to show us if they understood everything and we have started our observation procedure from that moment.
After the users showed that they are familiar with the device we have placed the prototype in the kitchen and every participant was asked to fill out their individual container with their favourite sweets and confectionery bars, and sweets but we have reminded them about the daily sugar limit. Next the users locked their containers and left to carry on their daily activities.
Artur and Kamil have decided to observe the users because the activity took place in their kitchen. They took notes but to be able to see the participants using the prototype they had to wait on the way to the kitchen and every time they saw a user heading down there they were following them, observed and took notes. That activity was very time consuming but our observers used the waiting time to work on their laptops and they were taking turns so only one of them had to be present at a specific time.
We have also placed a notepad next to the prototype and asked the participants to make notes about anything they would like to say about their experience. We have also asked them to make a note of the time if they would like to use the prototype when no observer would be present, for example in the middle of the night.
We have noticed that after introducing users to the prototype they were very enthusiastic and we have received comments that the idea sounds very interesting. Apparently all participants were so excited about the competition between them that none of them decided to open their personal container on the first day.
However we have noticed that when some of them were walking past the prototype they were looking at it and when asked for an opinion they answered that they were curious if any other participant has already opened their container.
One of the users decided to open their container and take the confectionery bars, and sweets out. They have also asked if they are allowed to leave some of the confectionery bars, and sweets in the container and leave them for another day. Our team did not consider a situation like this because we have assumed that if the daily limitation is not very high, then the participants would probably eat the whole content of their container after they open it. The participant has noticed that it would not be fair if they only ate half of their container while the other person would eat the whole content and they would be on the same position in the ranking. We have taken that into consideration and decided to plan and resolve that problem.
The participant who decided to eat half of the content from their container had to refill it in the morning. Because they left some of the treats in the container on the previous day, they were reminded that they can only refill the container up to the maximum level of sugar. We have noticed that calculating the amount of sugar in different confectionery bars, and sweets was time consuming and the user seemed discouraged by that activity.
Another participant has decided to open their container at the end of this day and they decided to eat the whole content.
Participant number 2 had no time to refill their container in the morning and decided to do it later.
When all participants has finished their work and came back home, they decided that they are going to watch a movie later that evening. Participant number 2 has proposed to go to the supermarket and get some treats for the movie night for everyone. When all participants came back from the supermarket, each of them was carrying much more confectionery bars, and sweets than their daily allowance and in the excitement about the movie night they all have decided to have a cheat day that night.
From our observation notes we have concluded that we definitely need to upgrade our prototype because there was a very little interaction between the users and there was no shared media platform. The users were also very discouraged by the fact that they had to refill their container every time they decided to eat anything from it.
We have decided to improve the prototype and think what could be done to improve the user's experience. We would like to also introduce something which would work as a shared media surface and also make the users to interact with each other more.
1st Prototypes Design Problems
After presenting our first prototype to our tutor, we noticed that our idea lacked in sharing information. With only information being shared through confectionery bars, and sweets notes and one LCD on our first prototype, this was not enough. Discussing our shared media surface Moti-Diet, we thought about improvements that can be made. Coming up with many ways we can incorporate information onto our first prototype of Moti-Diet, but because Moti-Diet was designed in a unique way there was not much room to implement shared media into our design. We decided that we needed to go back to the drawing board and rethink our Moti-Diet shared media surface. At the end of our interaction class session we went to the library and started to think about new ideas. As a group we decided that we did not want to use our first prototype of Moti-Diet, we thought that this design will limit us to shared information. The overall concept and reason for creating Moti-Diet we liked, but the build was what we wanted to change. Sketching up some ideas we came up with a new design and new features to share information on Moti-Diet. Here are some notes we made within our group meeting.
Week 6 - Individual Research and Improvements
Last week we discovered some major issues with our shared media surface. Our group overall felt a bit disappointed but with not much time left we had to pick ourselves up and get on track. Speaking with our tutor Dan last week, he suggested instead of the three juice bottles as containers for confectionery bars, and sweets we should put all the confectionery bars, and sweets in a cupboard. At first our group was not to excited of that idea, but once we thought what can be implemented onto this cupboard we decided that this really was a great idea. He also asked us question like, “how will we stop people from cheating”? A question that sparked up more ideas for the group. We then started to brainstorm and think about ways we can stop users from cheating. Our ideas consisted of a webcam for face recognition and a bar code scanner which connects to a database. Our group also decided instead of having a LCD Display, we will put a monitor on the cupboard. This monitor will act as the main surface for information. Our tutor also asked another question for our group to think about, which was, " How will Moti-Diet effect individual members of a household? This was also something which someone in our group should research and give examples.
We also remembered within our presentation week one of the groups gave use feedback about implementing a calendar. Our group thought this idea would be great, displaying more information on. Taye and Kamil also really like the idea at the watershed, which included the notice board and feedback of movies. After 2 days of communicating through the groups WhatsApp group we decided to implement a Whiteboard into the empty space on the side of the cupboard. Our main reason we chose to implement the white board was because we were able to add and erase. Between now and next week, we decided for individuals in the group to research parts of the new element of our design. Below is our groups overall weekly ideas and Moti-Diet new improvement drawing.
People Interacting with Cupboard
The interaction between people and cupboards has always been about collecting what is inside of the cupboard. Cupboards are implemented within family homes, shared homes, schools, universities and business. Within a home environment cupboard are usually used for confectionery bars,sweets, cans, sugar, rice, pasta, recipe books, recipe pamphlets and many other small things. People interact with their cupboards by opening it, grabbing what they need and then closing it. Another way people interact with their cupboards is, right before going shopping (Preece, Sharp and Rogers, 2015). A cupboard can be opened multiple times a day by different people collecting items from within. Changing our idea from a stand-up Moti-Diet snack container system to a Moti-Diet cupboard was a great decision because it allowed us to share more information with people. Our shared media platform will be able to hold many different surfaces which will be able to share different forms of information.
There was 2 members out of Moti-Diet development team that visited the MSHED for the web design conference. Kamil and I both enjoyed the conference and noticed many shared media surfaces. One of the best shared media surfaces that we liked was the notice board which displayed individual’s personal thoughts about the movie they had seen. This sparked up an idea for our design. Amongst our group we discussed the benefits of implementing a board onto our overall platform, and the negative impact. Overall, we thought that implementing a board onto our share media platform will share more information with housemates or families. Turning an empty space on the side of our cupboards and replace it with the board which will share more information.
Discussed the types of boards with the other member of the development team we wanted to find the best board to display on the cupboard. Looking at a wide range of different boards, there was one type of board that met the groups requirement. This was the white board. According to (Logo Visuals, 2013) whiteboards on cupboards are popular in both workplaces and schools. Not only can you provide drawings, facts, and different information but you are able to add and erase. Adding this shared information surface onto our cupboard will add more features to our platform.
Moti-Diet Effect On Individual Family Members
Moti-Diets effect on individual family matter may differ due to age, jobs, daily activity or diets. Our Moti-Diet shared media surface is designed for families and housemate. The whole purpose of the design is to keep people inside their daily sugar consumption. Moti-Diet will affect people differently, some people will enjoy the motivation shared surface and others may want to consume more sugar then daily recommended, but remember that this shared media surface was designed to bring forth awareness for sugar consumption and provide guidance. This shared media surface might affect people differently by their age, occupation or lifestyle. Here are some examples:
- Kids - may love using Moti-Diet because the design is fun, and they win a reward at the end of the week. Kids may think of it as a game and want to play it. They may not like that their sugar consumption is watched, and they can not eat as much sugar as they want.
- A Teenager - may not enjoy the fact that Moti-Diet watches how much sugar they eat, but will enjoy winning the money in the reward system. They may also like the face recognition and technology involved in Moti-Diet.
- A Mid Age Adult - may not be too enthusiastic about the reward but loves using Moti-Diet because it watches their sugar consumption and it doesn’t allow for people to cheat. They may also like that Moti-Diet keeps a database of their recoded consumption each week and can be shown on the monitor.
- A University Student - may be interested in Moti-Diet because they would like to win the reward, but they also appreciate that this shared media surface can benefit their health.
As we can tell Moti-Diet will affect different people differently. This shared media platforms, purpose is to bring forward a healthy diet but not everyone always will want to participate. Its something like a cigarettes package, having a person in bad health condition on the front of the package but people still will smoke them. Some people will enjoy using Moti-Diet and become motivated and others will not.
I have had previous experience with barcode readers/scanners as we used one in our family business. These are very simple devices, all the user has to do is connect such reader via USB cable and the scanner should automatically light up and be ready to take readings from barcodes and put them into any document like word, notepad or excel. This means we will get the barcode reading input instantly to the computer. However, we are going to need a database that will be able to understand that such barcode reading requires an action to find a product.
We were planning to run our device on Arduino. However, putting a whole database into Arduino and creating a code that will enable Arduino to understand what to do with the reader input and also implementing face recognition to it would be too hard or could even not be possible as Arduino is a very simple microprocessor. We have decided that the best solution will be to implement Raspberry Pie instead of Arduino. Raspberry Pie is a small version of PC which can easily run anything that can be run on a PC. Database can be made simple in Excel without the need for special coding. Face recognition can also be easily implemented as there is wide range of third-party software that we can use.
I have done some research and I have found a perfect barcode reader that would fit perfectly with our design. This reader is very small and does all it needs to do, just what we need.
This is quite a new technology but we think it is possible to obtain software that will allow us to use our webcam to recognise who opens the cupboard. I have done some research and found a software called FaceFirst. It looks very professional and I believe it could work very well with our cupboard system. I have found a YouTube video explaining how the software works and these people actually installed it on a Raspberry Pie just as we plan to do.
They have a whole database of faces as well but we could contact them and ask them if we could use their software for our purposes.
I have used Photoshop to create the logo for Moti-Diet. I chose this software because I have many years of experience with it. I have done many logos and banners in this software before for business purposes as well as a hobby. I made the logo simple yet catchy. Logos nowadays are getting more and more simple. If we compare for example Windows 95 logo which was colourful, had bold stroke around the windows, bold font etc. to a Windows 10 logo which is just four white windows on a blue background with white thin font, we can see that the logos evolve into simpler designs.
I have spent couple hours to create the logo. I have asked our group members which font they liked the most out of four I chose before I started making the logo. Everyone in our group agreed on one font and I made sure no one knew what the other chose. Therefore, the font I used in the logo is preferred by everyone in our group.
I took the font from a website that had no copyrights on the fonts to make sure we won’t have problems when we start selling our product.
Touch Screen Monitor
For our second prototype we have decided that we will use a touch screen display. I have done a research and decided that using a touch screen monitor will be not a good idea because monitors are mostly designed for desktop PCs and they usually stand on the desk or hang on the wall. The monitor would simply be too heavy to be used as a display on a cupboard door.
I had an idea that we could implement a touchscreen from a laptop. These screens were designed to be energy efficient, they do not generate much heat and are very thin and very light. However they are also very delicate and have to be built in into the laptop’s cover. In our prototype that shouldn’t be a problem because we will be able to use the cupboard’s door as a cover for that fragile display.
I have found several laptop touchscreen displays and unfortunately they were too expensive for us to implement in our second prototype. However we had another idea that we could use a Kindle tablet as a prototype replacement for the project. We understand that this display will be smaller but it will still be able to display how the system will work and that will help us to explain how the prototype works when we will present it to the users.

Week 7 - 2nd Prototype Testing and Observation
2nd Prototype Design
This week our group met in the UWE library and discussed our overall improvements and individual research. With everyone in the group feeling more confident about our design, we decided we will move into the second phase of our prototype. With Arthur and Kamil creating the first Moti-Diet prototype, Taye will be creating the second. With new improvements to the Moti-Diet design this prototype will be a lot more complex than the first. After Taye has built MOTI-DIET he will then have to test it, this will tell how effective Moti-Diet is and whether the improvements where good. Planning to do another test period of 4 days this will allow for the group to really see the interaction between people and Moti-diet. Starting from the bottom to the of the second MOTI-DIET prototype, Taye began to gather 4 cardboard boxes. Using sellotape, he then taped the cardboard boxes in the shape of a cupboard. Approximately the measurements were 15inch (height) 10.5 (width) 10inch (length). Using the two boxes to make the cupboard, the third box was used to add more layers to the design, making it more stable. Now that the Moti-Diet design had a stable platform it was time to think how will the monitor firmly be displayed on the door of the cardboard (cupboard). Using the forth box, he used this to make the third layer on to the cupboard door. Having 3 layers of cardboard on the door allowed him to be able to cut a square box into the door fitting a monitor perfectly. This box did not look the best with the amount of sellotape taped all around the box (cupboard), so he done some covering up. Adding a wooden style duct tape, covered the sellotape making the Moti-Diets platform look like a lot like a cupboard. With the Moti-Diet design stable he then placed the Kindle Monitor in the cut-out monitor holder. The Bar code scanner - Yumite Mini USB Fixed Mount Scanner - (image) was then implemented underneath the monitor, with a wooden handle for the cupboard. The next thing he done was added the whiteboard on the side of the cupboard eliminating the empty space making more room to share information. The logo was then placed on the front of our design and the outside of Moti-Diet was complete. The inside of Moti-Diet consisted of making 1 shelve out of a kitchen square under plate which fitted perfect within the box. This was also tested to see how much weight it can hold, holding enough weight. A Logitech C270 720p webcam was stuck in the middle at the top of the box allowing for face recognition to be captured as soon as door opened. Inside of the cupboard on the bottom shelve was the reward located in a clear zip pouch. Here is a image of the 2nd prototype of Moti-Diet.
2nd Prototype Testing
This week Taye placed Moti-Diet inside of his kitchen and observed the interaction between Moti-Diet and housemates. All housemates are above 21 and are recommended to only consume 30g of sugar per day. Having a group of 3, he explained the overall purpose of Moti-Diet and all participants where happy to be part of the observation test. The observation test was held over a period of 4 days and jotting down notes helped with the coop with the documentation throughout the days. All participant commented on the design of Moti-Diet and said the monitor and whiteboard were all interesting ways of displaying formal and informal information. All participants put in £5, to add to the reward pouch, making £15 in total.
All participant went to Tesco and bought their favourite confectionery bars, and sweets. Placing all their snacks on the counter they began to scan the items into the cupboard. After scanning products into the cupboard, the participants checked to see if all of their confectionery bars, and sweets where inside of the cupboard. Later that evening all participants revisited Moti-Diet and started to eat their confectionery bars, and sweets. Participant 2 ate up to 28g of sugar in confectionery bars and sweets that night, Moti-Diet warned her that she could not eat any more snacks. She was alright with this because she said she had ate enough anyway. Participant 1 ate only 15g of sugar in confectionery bars and sweets that night and said that he was happy with that. Participant 3 ate 24g in confectionery bars and sweet that evening.
Throughout the day all participants interacted with Moti-Diet. They all said that their first interaction with Moti-Diet was because they wanted to know more about it. Within this interaction they discover who was in the lead. With Participant 1 in the lead, other participants felt as they could have eaten less confectionery bars and sweet last evening. Participants 1 ate 29g of sugar in confectionery bars and sweet today and was alerted that he could not eat anymore. This individual participates diet is not the healthiest as he always eats junk foods. Participant 2 ate 24g of sugar in confectionery bars and sweet today and said that she was trying to do better from yesterday. She said, “setting herself a target helped her with today”. She also expressed that she liked how Moti-Diet was helping with her bad habit of eating too much confectionery bars and sweet. Participant 3 ate 20g of sugar in confectionery bars and sweet that evening and he said that this is how much confectionery bars and sweet he will normally eat. Participant 3 is usually in the gym and is more focused on eating cooked food unlike participant 1, who eats a lot of junk food.
On this day all the participants have got use to the Moti-Diet System and are aware how it works. Participant 1 and 2 said that they have checked the rankings on the monitor and was not happy that participant 3 has a better chance of winning the reward. Both participants planned to try to eat as less confectionery bars and sweet today. Participant 3 was happy with the lead and said he doesn’t have a need to eat confectionery bars and sweet as often as others. Participant 1 ate 15g of sugar this day, and said that they were trying their hardest to not eat any sweets. Participant 1 also said that Moti-Diet is actually a great way of watching his sugar consumption and he can see how people can benefit from it. Participant 2 ate 24 g of sugar today and said that she was trying hard not to eat that much chocolate today, but she couldn’t help herself. Participant 3 ate 15g of sugar today and said that he was trying to cut back on the chocolate bars this week because he focused on losing weight.
On this day all of the participants where all happy to find out who won. Participant 2 said that she knew she would not win. Participant 1 said that he had a chance of winning and participant 3 said he believed he would win. This was the day that everyone was trying to more win the reward. With this said participant 1 and participant 3 did not touch any sweets on this day. Participant 2 said she knew she would lose, so she ate another 24g. They all gathered around Moti-Diet and discussed the winner of the 4 days. The reward was rewarded to participant 3 with only 59g of sugar consumed over the last 4 days.
Participants overall evaluation of Moti-Diet
The participants at the end of the test trial said that this sugar awareness shared media surface was great because it really helped them manage their diets. Participant 2 said that she has learned that she does eat to much junk food and a lot which has sugar. Moti-Diet has showed and proved that to her. Participant 1 said that he is working on his overall diet and Moti-Diet has motivated him to do this. Participant 3 said that he sees what Moti-Diet does and he thinks the idea is great and will good to use with children.
Our group felt like it would be necessary to have a short video for people that don't know what Moti-Diet is. One of group members (Taye) has a friend that attends Screenology Film School and is in his second year of his degree. Taye made arraignments for Daunte to shoot our video 02/12/2017 at 12:00. With all members of the group actin within the video we planned to have a short and to the point video. We all came up with a scenario of how we wanted to make the video days before shooting. Week 8 - Final Prototype, Poster & Project Evaluation
Final Prototype Design
Our group decided that our second prototype was a great representation of Moti-Diet. With the testing and observation of the second prototype we decided that this would be our Final Prototype. Our development team spoke to Moti-Diet users and 90% of users saying that they would recommend this system in all kitchens and 95% of users agreed that Moti-Diet does help them maintain their sugar intake. Users also expressed that the design of the Moti-Diet system was attractive and both shared media surfaces on the cupboard provided informal and formal information.
Moti-Diet users also expressed that the sugar awareness system provides families and housemate with better habits. The Moti-Diet development team is very excited to see more and more users implement their system into kitchen environments and provide a better lifestyle for families and housemates.
Over the last weeks as a group we have worked hard and effectively. Overall, I feel as the group has succeeded and has met the assignment brief and design brief. Going through many ups and downs with the creation of Moti-Diet, at the end we came out with a fantastic prototype. We expanded our minds and we created something I believe can be used in a kitchen environment. We set out to make a sugar awareness system which never lets users go over the daily sugar amount, and we completed our main goal. I feel as the design of the Moti-Diet is great, and it has formal and informal information shared on it. I feel as our group really worked hard and put in a lot of effort to bring Moti-Diet to life and I just want to thank my other group members for their time and effort. I also want to thank our tutor Dan for pushing use over our limits and making us think outside of the box. I believe every individual group member of the Moti-Diet Development team learned something from this project. The main thing I enjoyed about being apart of the project was the development part of building Moti-Diet, It gave me such a great sense of achievement and brought me confidence up. This project made me feel as whatever I put my mind to I can achieve.
I believe the project went well in overall. We have managed to create initial prototype and discuss it with other groups and our lecturer, where we realised the first prototype needed improvements. We have made drastic changes to the first prototype and came up with completely different device. However, the purpose of it stayed the same. Unfortunately, because of that drastic change to the first prototype, we had no time to create an actual working device. We only got a very good prototype to present on 7th of December. We are very well prepared to present our device and we are very eager to show it to everyone. We have created a professional looking poster with descriptions and explanations of the project and we have printed it on A0 paper and it is ready for the presentation day. I think our group have learned a lot from this project. We have learned to work in a group, meet outside of university and manage our time so that we met the deadline even though we have built two prototypes that took quite a lot of time. We have also been keeping our wiki up to date all the time which helped us to remember what we did the weeks before.
In my opinion our project was successful because at the end our group have managed to prepare everything what was required in the assignment specification. We have also finished our second and prototype and we are ready to present it on the 7th of December.
Unfortunately our project is only a prototype but that is ok because we were not required to build a finished product but just the prototype which we could use in our tests to see what else could be improved.
When we were testing both prototypes we have found a few issues. We were able to improve the first prototype and make the second version which was much better but unfortunately we have focused on planning and building the first prototype for too long and I think that if we had more time we could implement some improvements to our second prototype. However the time we have spent on testing the first prototype wasn’t wasted because in the end we have come to a better solution and without the knowledge gathered while building the first prototype we would never be able to make the second one.
