Semester 2 - Society and Technology Diagnosing the Digital Present

Assignment Overview

What important issues impact the current relationship between Society and Technology? Which of these issues matter to you? In groups of three or four research and create a hi-fidelity prototype that explores your chosen area. You should aim for your final prototype / project and documentation to be a platform and showcase for your creative skills.

Example approaches:

Creating a prototype that supports an organisation such as a charity, community interest group or company that is working in or associated with your defined area of interest.

Creating a prototype that supports a campaign or movement that is associated with your defined area of interest.

Creating a prototype that addresses a specific user group or audience that is associated with your defined area of interest:

Activities

Conduct Research –

Research your chosen area with a small scale literature review.
Conduct research with your audience / user group / organization / campaign.
Research and analyse comparable or related projects and examples.
Log your research on a group blog which will form the basis of your research journal.

Create a Design Brief –

Write a design brief based on your research and analysis.

Create a Prototype –

Prototype a design / project based on your design brief, test it, iterate your design and document its final form as a hi-fidelity prototype.

Write a Report –

Write a prototype report describing your design processes and final prototype.

Create a Graphic Display –

Create a graphic display to accompany the presentation of your prototype.

Document the Prototype –

Create appropriate and effective documentation of your prototype.

Semester 1 - Interacting with History: People, places and information sharing in contexts

Assignment Overview

In groups of four you will conduct design based research on interactive systems and educational tools that could be used to engage specific audiences with information about the recent history (1950-2018) of some aspect of Bristol. This includes the people and events related to the city and the physical city itself. You will then develop an interactive installation based on your chosen aspect of Bristol’s history to engage a specific audience at a museum, public space or other specific context in Bristol (such as M-Shed, We The Curious, Bristol Museum, Millennium Square etc,). In order to do this, you will carry out the following activities:

  • Activity 1 – Conduct design based research.
  • Activity 2 – Create a design brief and present it.
  • Activity 3 – Prototype a design solution, document it and present it
  • Activity 4 – Document your project using a group blog.
